By reading about the following events of her life you may get a better sense of what impacted her life to make her who she is today:
As a young child, Linda watched a classmates from an orphanage come to school everyday, stigmatized and teased by classmates. Linda became their everyday friend and did so with leadership and loyalty. What Linda realized from this experience was that she could be just as compassionate toward others and that she was viewed as a leader. She knew she could make a positive difference in her world. Her sense of leadership, justice, fairness and equal treatment became hallmarks of her mind and personality. Throughout her life, Linda became the champion for others...those facing discrimination, injustice, inequality and unfairness and in organizations who needed to pursue change. Whenever they needed a genuine and common-sense leader to address their concerns, Linda responded readily and with conviction.
“We must be the change we wish to see in the world.”
As a High School Teacher, Linda served in poor and working class communities as she knew them to be ones in which she could make the biggest difference. Always ready to reach out, she expected her students to reach higher and higher. Several students in her classrooms were inspired to become teachers as a result of Linda’s positive impact on their lives. Others who were not likely to graduate became motivated to succeed in her classes and to go on to graduate. Most cited Mrs. Patterson as their favorite teacher and one that inspired them to work harder and succeed. Today, many of her students remain in touch because she was such a positive influence on their lives. As a result of her effectiveness, Linda Patterson was recognized as "Teacher of the Year" for the manner in which she touched the lives of adolescents.
Within several years, Linda earned a Masters Degree and became a High School Intervention Counselor. Linda worked diligently for adolescents in career and college counseling, academic planning, therapeutic needs and intervention. Their ability to become more successful were the result of her guidance in goal setting, planning, follow up and commitment to their individual needs. Her proudest accomplishments were many; however, if you are fortunate to hear her talk about the Adolescent and Faculty Goal-Setting Retreats she led -a bright spark in her eye becomes apparent. Students and teachers regarded these four day retreats as the most significant self improvement opportunities they had ever experienced! They served to permanently change their lives. Many “at risk students” graduated with honors after refocusing their efforts toward changing their lives. Many others made similar leaps. During class reunions many site them as their most memorable experiences from high school. Linda was rewarded as "Staff Member of the Year" as recognition for these and many other excellent endeavors.
As a Public Administrator and High School Principal, Linda was motivated to change policies, systems, personnel and the status quo to improve these organizations. She led the effort to make high schools more effective by providing the opportunities for their staff members to examine research, data and best practices to set goals, make strategic plans and implement for greater success. Personnel became more effective teams that were successful in changing the status quo. She moved others to dedicate themselves to create effective opportunities and actions. For her accomplishments, Linda was recognized as "Administrator of the Year."
Linda Patterson's unique approach in changing lives is based on the foundational belief that if we create the opportunities for people to succeed, they will follow their very own pathways to thrive. Legislative Committees she is assigned and the laws she proposes will, no doubt, reflect these ideas.
